Re:40S5 GROUP STORY

Date Posted:01/05/2024 6:12 AMCopy HTML

Maddie, now with a full stomach, decided to go back to her room and see if Evelyn's list had been delivered.  As she approached her room, she saw a yellow paper sticking out from under the door.  Yep, that must be the list.  She bent and picked it up as she went in then sat down on the bed and read the list.  Within five minutes of perusing the list, with her appetite sated, she drifted off to sleep.

An hour later she awakened and looked at her watch.  Six o'clock.  Good thing it's summertime and the evenings are long, she thought.  It won't be dark for another two hours.  Think I'll go wander around some more.  The list can wait.

As before, she ambled down the hallway, took the down staircase, but this time she went on by the kitchen to the large back porch.  Looking around the huge, shady back yard she happened to see her two young friends, Mercedes and Bentley, playing what looked like a game of hopscotch.

"Hi, that looks like fun," she said.

Bentley replied, "Yeah, I guess.  It's the only game we could think of to play.  Do you want to join us?"

"Not right now, maybe later," Maddie laughed.  "I'm just looking around the grounds for clues."

"Can we help you?  Please, please?"

Maddie was impressed by the children's youthful enthusiasm, and said, "Sure, why not?"

The three of them started walking in the direction of the back edge of the yard, when Maddie saw an almost camouflaged little building sitting in the back corner of the elaborate eight-foot-tall fence that surrounded the property.

Mercedes said, "Oh that's just an old storage building.  I think it must contain some gardening tools, or something, because I saw Alfred coming out of there earlier."

Maddie approached the building, noting the heavy-duty padlock on the door.  Maddie's father had been a brick and block mason and had taken Maddie as a child with him several times to the job site.  Maddie knew enough about masonry to appreciate a good brick building, and sizing this one up, she realized it was very well built.  It probably even contained rebar and Durowire, with concrete-filled blocks.  This building would easily withstand a tornado, and in fact, it's sturdiness would be just shy of the Harrington vault, she surmised.   Looking closer, she was surprised to see the shank of the lock only appeared to be latched, when indeed the lock was open.

"Well, kids, shall we go inside and have a look around?"

Maddie removed the lock, opened the door and stepped inside, followed by the kids.  The echoing atmosphere and dank, smelly air inside encouraged her thoughts of the strength of the building.  It was almost like a cave. She flipped the light switch and the small room lit up.  It was perhaps ten feet square with shelves around the bare block walls.  All kinds of tools littered the shelves, some that Maddie didn't even recognize.  She slowly walked into the room looking around.

"What are all these tools?" Bentley asked.

"Some I recognize, but some I don't," Maddie replied.  "The question is why does Alfred need such a collection of tools."

Mercedes said, "The floor feels funny.  I think I felt it move a little."

Maddie bent and looked closer at the floor.  It was covered by what once had been a very pretty linoleum, but now was showing a bit of wear.  It only covered the center portion of the floor, the rest being bare concrete.  Maddie lifted a corner of the linoleum and was shocked to see a hidden trap door!

Both children exclaimed in unison, "A trap door!"

"Can we go down and see where it leads?" asked Mercedes excitedly.

"Hmmm," replied Maddie, also surprised by this turn of events.  "Looks like steps leading down.  You girls follow me but be very careful.  We don't know how deep this thing is."

They started down the spiral staircase until it became too dark to see.  Maddie retrieved her cell phone out of her hip pocket and turned on the flashlight.

The descent was about thirty feet, and just as the children were starting to be afraid, they came to the apparent bottom.  A long hallway began in front of them.  After spiraling down the steps, Maddie couldn't be certain of the direction the hallway led, but she thought it was headed toward the house.  An open doorway beckoned.  And fortunately, just as Maddie was starting to worry about the battery life of her phone, she saw a convenient light switch just on the other side of the threshold.  She flipped it, and voila! There was light!  Granted, not much light, but more than what her phone was putting out.  The first light was above their heads, then another light about every fifty feet, by the looks of the shadows between.

"Where does it go?" asked Mercedes.

"I guess we'll find out," Maddie said.  "But it's obvious that someone went to a great deal of expense to build this tunnel."

The hallway was rather narrow, about four feet wide, flat, but slightly curved, so that the end wasn't in sight.  The floor seemed to be smooth concrete, and the walls, again were made from concrete blocks.

They walked along at a leisurely pace for about fifteen minutes.  Bentley was the first to see it.  "There's the end!"

Sure enough, another spiral staircase slowly became visible, this one leading upward.

They began to slowly climb the metal rungs, until a trapdoor appeared over their heads.  Hoping it wouldn't be locked, or too heavy to lift, Maddie pushed.  Slowly, as grit fell onto her shoulders, the door rose until it fell over, completely open.  They ascended into darkness, apparently a room of some sort.  A motion-activated light suddenly lit up their surroundings.  Lo and behold, they were in the Harrington vault!

There were valuables on various shelves in the vault. After Maddie took pictures of the contents with her phone the three went back into the tunnel, and returned, speculating on the meaning of what they had discovered.

At the ladder to the shed Bentley pointed to the ceiling and said, "What's that?"

Maddie and Mercedes looked. There was a black handle near the tunnel ending. Mercedes climbed the ladder and pulled on it. With an ominous groan some of the bricks at the end of the tunnel rotated like a door, revealing a 30 meter square room. In the center of the room was a flying saucer. A panel was off it and Pedro Gonzales was fiddling with the works. He looked toward them and momentarily seemed to resemble an octopoid alien.

"Naaah! Can't be!" thought Maddie.

"Yay, Pedro. Do that shape-shifting again! Teach us how to do it!" chorused the young sisters.

There is NOTHING illiterate about the short story.  During the last survey everyone was in the History or Computer Science section of the library reading true stories. In fact, it seems a new programming language might be discovered changing the world as we know it. Wait... is that fiction... LOL

The last fiction book I read was The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown because I had to for an English Elective Course that focused on Criminal Fiction. That was about three years ago to complete my Cyber Security degree. I then had to write a paper that compared that book to the teachings of the Catholic church and point out the flaws, which there were many. I would say overall it was a good read since I could readily see where it went off the rails regarding the life of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

Before that, I would say the last fiction book I read was The Princess Bride by William Goldman back in 1981. I read it because it was sitting on a cocktail table at a friend's house. While at this friend's house a party was taking place and everyone was getting drunk. I was the designated driver so I stayed sober and read the book to entertain myself. I will readily admit that it was interesting, (the movie was better), and I did finish it two days later.

By the way, I am just having fun here with my short story fiction. Maybe we could have a list of recommended history books or biographies.

And, I get my fiction from watching movies. I will say some of my favorite movies are based on true stories too.

Those are pretty good, Dave, considering they give absolutely NO details such as specific clues, etc. LOL.

A trillion miles on one gram of diamond?  Well, I have no idea how much the average diamond weighs, but it sounds like it's pretty miserly.  But I hope they didn't travel from a tremendously far distance though, or they would have been out of fuel, unless they had a cargo load of diamonds, lol.  A trillion miles is only one-sixth of a light year, and the nearest star is 4.2 light years away, so it would take 25.2 grams of diamond just to come from Proxima Centauri B.  How fast do they go?  LOL.  Hopefully near the speed of light.

Did Maddie discover that info about the diamond propellant?  LOL.
